If you try Superspicer it will open up a 3mf file, for all I know Cura might too. In FreeCAD you just select the body from the left window and export as 3MF. No meshing, no complicated procedure, no VooDoo, that's it.

The stl file will always be made up of triangles. You can still get a smooth looking surface as long as the Cad program your using does a smooth surface.
