New heater block to fit standard nozzles on Ultimaker 3

So, a few months ago I realized that I need the dual printing technology of the Ultimaker 3 to print very abrasive materials, and that I can't wait for Ultimaker to release a good enough solution (if they ever do). At first I thought making new ruby nozzles for the Ultimaker 3 would be the best opti...

Re: New firmware!

Intrigued, since I hadn't seen any non-Ultimaker nozzle packs supported? I designed a new heater block for the UM3 some time ago. We want to print abrasive things with two materials and designing a new block was easier than making new ruby nozzles that fits the UM3-block. The new block has a featur...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

"Block V3 needs > 1nM to prevent leaks sometimes " Those "sometimes" always makes me nervous as an engineer :-P The thing that I really want to try is the nozzle with dual output, on Foehnsturm tests he was able to extrude flexibles quite easier (hence less pressure needed to pu...

Re: New firmware!

Nice that they are working on speeding things up! I find myself rather annoyed by how slow the UM3 can be compared to the UM2 when using both printers side by side. Some more functionality would be nice too, going back to the UM2 with the tinkergnome is such a relief. The new active leveling takes l...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

I can't make any big statements about it other than it is working and looks good, oh and is easy to clean  I find that rather nice with the Matchless block too! Putting a hard surface coating on objects that are supposed to form a metal-to-metal seal is like asking for trouble (=leaks) though,...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

Very good write up I wonder if Swordriff will respond I just wanted to add something to this: I think Carl has been quite important both for the success of the Olsson block and for Ultimaker as a company. When the sales of the Ultimaker 2 skyrocketed, their support department collapsed people found...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

If I saw this right...a retractable nozzle? It is actually a bit more advanced than that :-) Regarding patents, I would say that patents are generally only blocking development or helping large companies gaining more money. For people with limited budget (like me) it makes little sense to patent th...

Re: Ultimaker Brand PLA

I have been printing nearly two spools of Ultimaker Silver PLA past weeks (combining nozzle testing with Christmas gift manufacturing :-) ) The first spool was an older one, probably a year old or so, and second spool was brand new. Both of them printed well on my UM2E (with the original feeder, TFM...

My lathe is called Nanoturn:: http://www.bernardo.at/shop/en/metal/metal-working/turning-lathes/nanoturn.html But identically looking machines are sold under numerous brands If you want to make nozzle-like stuff you need at least this tool: http://gg-tools.com/epages/4a53cb12-c349-4e1e-aa61-062b1756...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

Just to clarify - I think Carl's patent has nothing to do with ruby or sapphire nozzles and instead is related to a newer secret nozzle. But I could be wrong. And it's *that* nozzle, the secret nozzle, that "can't be made in china". Which I translate to meaning, "is unlikely to show ...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

I think most people use carbon fiber filament, or any of the other composite filaments, just for the look of it. While I am generally not very impressed by PETG-plastics, I have to say that the matte slightly glittering surface that XT-CF20 can give is rather attractive. It is not the nicest materia...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

just to clarify; my 1.5mm nozzle puts out 6-10 times more plastic than a "regular" 1.5mm nozzle. Again, any videos or other proof of that? Why are you hitting me on my quality issues, I have them all the time and I solve them. No secret. I ship new products. This is how it is to push boun...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

My design now is a high tech, patent pending design which can print much cooler than Anders design. You are not going to print much cooler than a brass nozzle at normal speeds, and I print at the same temperatures with ruby as with brass (with my latest design, not the prototypes). There are actual...

Re: Super hard nozzles - Test pilots

Sapphire and ruby is basically the same material. Ruby has the advantage of having a distinct rather uncommon color though. Sapphire is more difficult to separate from other transparent materials, like glass, unless you have special tools to analyze the material. Carl appears, for some reason, to ha...

Re: Dimensions of the heater fastening screw and washer on the block?

The quality of the blocks improved hugely when manufacturing was moved to Sweden in beginning of 2016. On blocks delivered before that, the holes were sometimes misaligned, which meant one has to use excessive force to fix both the heater and the sensor. The washer was also changed early 2016, from ...
