Cura Type A

Post by antiklesys »

Has anyone seen this yet?

http://hackaday.com/2016/06/10/3d-inter ... d-objects/

Link to download: https://www.typeamachines.com/blog/cura ... ta-is-here

It seems they took Cura and improved it's infill capability to do 3D infill structures.
I downloaded it and I was able to "restore it to use UMO settings" as it comes by default with their machine's profile.
I still haven't tested it as my printer is still into pieces.

Wow, that's impressive

Well if the software makers won't make the changes many want, it's impressive someone else did!

Material profiles...I was just asking about this!

Looking forward to feedback from our resident Ultimaker staffer :)

So: it prints!
Quality is really impressive, I bet they also changed some other stuff compared to the normal Cura.
I'm trying the 3D infill, it's like seeing crystals growing inside your print.
It's mesmerizing!

First print is out.
Printed with natural PLA 1.75mm at 210C with 3D infill and 0.2 layer height with a 0.4mm Ruby Nozzle.

It looks like a bee-hive...on all sides :O
The part feels extremely strong even on small bits.

There's a bit of warping on the base, but that's cause I'm still tuning the printer (and I don't have a hot bed).
It'll be fixed with tomorrow's series of tweaks.

Here's two pics taken with my mobile:

I think their material profiles only change 3-4 settings. Looks like a lot, but isn't really. Lulzbot also has a fuckton of profiles.

I've sent this to our engine guy, so he can have a look how easy it is to back port the 3d infill into our Cura.

Please not just the 3D infill, but also the other infill types they added.

I must say 3D infill sound like a really quick hack to do in the CuraEngine. It could be nice to have but I don't think it's the most important feature to implement.

Looking at the layerview the implementation of this by Type A machines seems to be a mess.

I downloaded this version of Cura, and honestly, it got to be one of the worst forks i have seen... To me this just feels like they see Cura as a cheap way of getting "their own" slicer without contributing back, kind of a dick move... It is really clear that they do not want it to be a open slicer.

They have removed all wizards for adding custom printers and all presets in favor for their own one based on the serial number of your Type A machine.
They force adding their own start/end gcode to every file (even if you set it to use UltiGcode...) and have removed the possibillty to edit start/end gcode in gui. (so to get it to print on a UM2+ without getting "tried to print out of printing area" error i had to manually edit the gcode)
SD Card detection is removed, so you cannot send directly to sd card easily
The "Send to printer" button is renamed to "Send to Series 1"
etc...

The 3D Infill looks nice (even if it is obviosly not a stable implementation after looking carefully in the layerviews where random errors occur multiple times), i am printing a first print with it now, but what use does those other types of infill really have? The Gradient ones looked like crap to me, should have much less strength than just a regular low infill since it does not connect well at any layer at all?

Hi Meduza,

I was able to edit and save the start-end g-code without issues. Not exactly sure what you have experienced.

Also the infill to "go for" is the 3D one.
The benefit is simply explained on the first hackaday post.
It gives the whole print a much more solid structure compared to the standard infill and heck..I can confirm that.
I now have some small tiny parts in my prints that are damn hard to break even if I try to break them in the direction of the layer.
Just to clarify...tiny part is a 5x5x5 cube coming out of a plane.

Ok, i did not manage to change the Start-end gcode, it might just be some bug then... but it was quite annoying to get dual start-gcodes when using UltiGcode wich tried to send my printer out of its printing area (and since i could not add a machine that was not using that start-end gcode)

Also the infill seems like a quite buggy hack, step trough the layers with 3D infill carefully in layer view, and you will see that you got random "layer shifting" of the infill wich compromises the infill strength quite often (or is this a feature?):

I haven't tried the new Cura...I've opted to play it safe with what I know works for me....but can the new one allow a user to save profiles for different filaments? Yes, that's usually 4 or 5 setting changes, but it would be really handy.
