Seeing these always makes me want to grab a Dremel and do some Plexiglas etching :)
One of the first things I'm gonna do on my CNC (when and if it might actually finally ever be built and work) will be a 3D engraving in 10mm Plexiglas with RGB lighting... *dreams*

You are doing it wrong, print it standing on the long edge instead and you will get much better resolution! :-)

You obviously need to use 100% infill.
White PLA works well, natural/translucent materials are too transparent.

There is a rather nice website to make STL-files from gray scale photos by the way:

One can make curved lithophanes on that site too which can be used as lamp covers for example.

On end, good tip. I do use 100% infill. I also need to adjust the thickness.
