MINTEMP Error help needed - Destroyed my hot end!

Post by BlackIce35 »

Oh sheet (keeping it clean here)! So I made the mistake of starting a print before bed and not watching the start of it to make sure all was on track... I woke up in the morning to see that I destroyed my hot end extruder and fan. What the firetruck (<--pg-13 version)!

So I ordered a replacement from Creality and finally got around to installing it. Very easy process, nothing difficult until..... the MINTEMP error. So here I am looking for help, here's what I've done after MUCH research and tearing the whole thing down.
  • I rechecked my wire connections a million times, all is simple and as it should be.
I pulled out the thermistor from the brand new hotend and confirmed it's fine.
I checked the soldering on the backside of the board for the thermistor connection, all looks good, it's not loose.
The pins to the connector are fine.
    The board looks fine.
I even checked the resistance on the connection end of the thermistor wires with a multimeter as suggested on one video on the mintemp error fix. The voltage matched what was shown on the video (so the new wires were good as expected on a brand new replacement from Creality).
So that's it? Suggestions??? I'm nearly ready to buy a new board at this point after having tried everything.
Thanks in advance!

Louie

When heating the hot-end does the temperature reading change.
If temperature changes at what temperature does the min-temp occur.

When Installing the thermister on to hot end make sure that it is fully inserted to bottom of hole...
What happens is sometimes we do not push thermister in far enough.
This leaves an air space between thermister an hot-end giving incorrect readings.

Carefully install the thermister locking screw and washer not to short either wire.

Oh I think we have all made a giant blob once in our 3D printing life...I had a print come off the bed and it attached and kept on going for 7 hours. A heat gun and a lot of careful cleaning ensued!

It sounds like you've checked everything...let us know what your testing shows

When my CR-10 hotend jammed up on me, I took it as a sign to upgrade to something reliable. One has a Bondtech Direct Drive System and the other has a E3D Titan Aero setup. Man, so glad I did that. Those things have been great.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated!

I tried to preheat PLA but the nozzle temp stays at 4 degrees. I rechecked the thermistor but all appears is as it should be. I am after all taking a brand new part and disassembling it in the odd event Creality didn't assemble correct. But it's back to the same position and no real room for play in there.

So I guess it's off to swapping out the board to the silent one: Creality 3D Ender 3 Pro New Upgrade Motherboard Silent Mainboard V1.1.5 with TMC2208 Driver for Ender 3/ Ender 3 Pro/Ender 5 /CR-10

Not sure if your display looks like mine, but mine always shows the temp of the hot end and the bed. Try gently pulling the thermistor out of the hot end and just holding it between your fingers, see if the temperature registers. If it doesn't, then you have a bad thermistor. They're very delicate and easy to break, but much cheaper than replacing the motherboard.

I concur with the above from Gruemaster
Those bulb types were never my favorite and the E3D upgrades to the cartridge type made life so much easier
