Lithopane generation suggestions

I've been wanting to try taking some of my photos and converting them to lithopanes. I've seen a few different techniques on Instructables and other sites, but so far nothing has worked for me. Has anyone tried making these from scratch? I prefer Linux based solutions, but am partially open to Windows as well (I can always run it in a VM).

Well, nevermind. I did a little more digging on Instructables, and found one using S3D. So, since I am a Cura fan, I thought I'd try it.

Looks Awesome!!! At least the rendering looks great. Will have to try different picture settings. 7 hours for a 110x80x11mm print is a bit much. Little too much detail.

Cura (at least old Cura) can make lithopanes from pictures! You just have to open a picture file ("load model file" -> enable all file types, or just drag&drop the jpg into Cura) and you get the lithopane wizard (simple thing, but I found it to work quite well).
