Desktop enviroment for Octopi?

Post by PNWMaker »

My Octopi kit came with a 5 inch 800*480 touch screen, which seems pretty pointless to me.

After booting, the Octopi prints this line:

Code: Select all

This image comes without a desktop environment installed because it's not
required for running OctoPrint. If you want a desktop environment you can
install it via

    sudo /home/pi/scripts/install-desktop
I'm tempted to do it just to see what it's like, but I'm not sure how much use it would be. I've seen a few comments saying that it also imposes a bit of a load on the Raspberry.

Has anyone installed a desktop for the Octopi? What's your take on it?

Well its like this if you are standing by at the Raspberry Pi with Octoprint you must be standing by the 3D Printer and it own controls.

I think that it would be redundant to have a screen on Octoprint and also have a screen on your 3D Printer.

However if you had an extra Raspberry Pi 3 you could make a Retro Gaming system.

If you don't have anything to offer to assist, perhaps not reply?
Questioning why he would use TouchUI with Octoprint seems petty?
And really, suggesting game systems ?

Ugh.

@PNWMaker , Chris' Basement just posted a tutorial that might be helpful.

I will not mention Game stuff again. Want me to edit it out.

OK.

I have updated Octoprint so many times now it seems 2nd nature configuring it.

I would suggest after you have OctoPrint working to remove the SD card and using USB Image Tool create a backup image.
This will allow you to easily restore the backup with all your configuration changes in case of failure.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm on Linux so I just downloaded Etcher, an image burner like the USB Image Tool.

1) Is there any way to remotely save the card image without taking it out of the Raspberry?

2) Does the "Backup & Restore" plugin in Octoprint copy just the config files from the SD card when it's mounted in the Raspberry?
