Remote viewing only? (For CNC Machine)

Post by LePaul »

So after a few weeks of working on the CNC machine each night, I am wondering about a remote viewing, similar to OctoPrint.

The machine takes about 1 hour to create the aluminum part I am making. I usually set my timer and come back every 20 minutes to make sure the end mill hasn't broken and check the quality of the work.

Being it is cold out still, it would be nice to station a web cam on the machine and remotely view a live stream of how it is going!

Ideas?

If you have an old iPhone or iPod with camera, there are two apps, iCamSource & iCam Pro that allows you to set the 1st as the source camera and monitor on the other.

Then CNC mill it ;)

Or take a raspberry pi with a raspberry pi camera and install MotionEyeOS: https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos/wiki

Or just get at cheap ip camera, those are 20$ and up on eBay and are complete self-contained units.

Sorry about that, it works well but you need to keep it plugged in as it drains the battery, I may look into the Raspberry Pi solution

I'll second Meduza here: don't over-engineer it.

A cheap IP cam and you will be good to go.
Raspberry Pi is a nice toy, but if you add the Pi, the cam, the SD-Card and the power supply it will cost you easily $80 which is more than a Foscam Full HD IP cam with IR illumination -- not to speak about the very cheap ones from the Bay...

Or their indoor models (like the Foscam C1) which are less expensive...

Be careful with the newer Foscam cameras. Their app stores admin password, device ID and MAC address of the camera on a Foscam server and with this information, it is also possible to get the SSID and password of your wireless network. In addition, their IOS app apparently doesn't correctly validate SSL certificates so that you can exploit it with a man-in-the-middle attack. Unfortunately the article where I read it is only available in German, but for those of you who like to see the article, let me know - or buy it here :-)

Ugh Goole translated the page but like most translators, it is not coherent. I'll let someone else summarize :)
