I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer, with over 6 years experience designing equipment from concept through production. I can design and create almost any product using 3D modeling software. I can also convert almost any 2D drawing to 3D including drawings and DXF's.

I have experience using multiple 3D modeling platforms including, OnShape, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, ProE, and SolidEdge.

I've had good luck with the Fiver service getting a few things done that were beyond my skillset

That offer should be interesting for many users here!

Question: Do you also fix models? I sometimes have 'broken' STP files (usually when they are exported from SolidWorks which seems to be a real weakness of SW) that can take quite some effort to correct and get actual solid body models instead of a bunch of loose surfaces with holes and inexact edges all over the place.

And how about design-for-manufacturing advice / consultancy? I'm asking because I am a self-learned 'mechanical engineer' and could use some advice here and there in my projects.

I apologize for the late response.

Yes, SW has that weakness, and I can certainly try and correct these issues but can not guarantee anything.

Yes, I can certainly help with issues if you have questions.

Thanks.

Cool! I'll keep it in mind for my next project (will take some time though, currently working with existing mechanical designs :( )

I'm going to be very clear here...if you continue to create new posts offering the same service over and over, you will be banned.

Hi jonnybischof
Just seen this post.
I use Solidworks as well and have been producing .stl files for a number of years now.
I have had no problems with my models, I may be lucky. All are solids and only have surfaces as cutting planes.
I have done some very complex enclosure of various companies and non have complained about the .stl models produced.
I use SW 2013 (I like this one the best) and SW 2106.
What sort of models are you making are they all surfaces?
When I started I would upload my .stl file to Shapeways to check all was well. It was normally thin walls that were the problem.
Have you looked at Shapeways?

Hi Lez0

I was talking about STP, which is not quite the same as STL. SW's STP models usually fail to import complex curved faces correctly in SpaceClaim, which is specialised in working with STP models from other sources. Most people use SpaceClaim for model cleanup and fixing errors before going to CAM.

Shapeways is great, I had them produce various prototypes for projects. Great quality (especially the strong & flexible plastic (SLS-Nylon). For checking stuff I can use SpaceClaim :)

Sorry, I miss-read stp for stl.
I have had my share of errors on importing stp files.
Good to know about complex surfaces.
I have just had an order delivered from Shapeways, in Stainless steel and alloy, very small parts.
I am surprised how detailed they are, they aren't perfect but are good enough for a working prototype prior to production.
The stainless steel is very hard for some reason, making it hard to file, but it seems almost indestructible.
I wander how long it is before we can print metal???

Well, since the printers for stainless steel that Shapeways uses don't have much in common with our reprap machines - probably never going to happen outside of a professional environment (power draw alone is more than household sockets can deliver).

(by the way, off topic here..)
