Ultimaker Original+ -- Green Edition

Post by nilrog » January 12th, 2017, 7:35 am

No...not (environmentally) green...only green...as I didn't like the "raw" look of the UMO+ ;-)

After a full year...I finally managed to have enough time to finish assembling my UMO+ :-o
IMG_0515.JPG
And the first print...was the Ultirobot...not perfect...but, apart from the hands, not bad :-)
(Using the Ultimaker Silver PLA that came with the printer)

After that I printed two more things...without adjusting anything...just to see how it performs. Still not perfect...but acceptable as first prints. The vase shows some signs of underextrusion...but i'm not sure if it is that...or the fact that the nozzle bumped into the "blobs" while printing and thus moved the shell, as it was only one shell.

Now it's time to make some adjustments and prepare for some upgrades...starting with printing some parts for the upgrade. As you might have guessed, putting an UM2 printhead with an Olsson Block is on the list :-)

I also have a pack of GT2 parts waiting for the Twisterblocks to be printed.

List of upgrades/modifications I have done:

Here is a list of direct links to the posts where I did certain upgrades/modifications if you want to get directly to the goodies :)

Green! Mine is Orange (in honor of the fine Dutch folks who designed it!)

A Plus is a nice machine. I'm debating how to tweak my UMO (non plus) without spending too much

Those are decent first prints. You just have some tweaking to do

Green? - mine too - on a short view they could be broters :-)
Great, nice work!

Spotted one mistake...the hotend fan was seated upside down :-P

Apart from that...it looks good...but the Z-stage sucks...need to go shopping for better bearings at least :-|

So i'm officially running with GT2 belts now on the stock firmware with adjusted E-steps.

I'm using Lars' Ultralight Ultimaker XY Blocks, with a slight hack due to the "10 mm layer issue" when I printed them. I will reprint them later since I anyway need to rebuild parts of the printer.

Seems to be working fine so far :)
(Even though I could not find the alignment tool so I had to do that manually :-P )

It's nice to find so many well-tested tweaks and upgrades for this printer. I really appreciate all the work you, and others, have put into sharing that info :)

Replaced the Z-axis bearings today with new Misumi ones that I got from 3D-Verkstan.
The original bearings were really crappy

After replacing the bearings I made some test printouts.

First off...low-poly Pikachu printed with Polymaker Polyflex, 200C, 50mm/s, 0.15 layers, retractions enabled, sliced with Cura 15.04. No other changes to the default settings.

The only "defect"...which was expected...is the top of the ears. With the stock fan shroud there is not enough cooling so they are a bit "melted".

Next I printed the same part that I could so easily break due to the "hollow" layer caused by the crappy bearings. Same settings and slicer as above.

The only thing here is that you can see a slight shift in the layers when the geometry of the part changes. That I can probably also tweak...but these were just a couple of quick tests...and i'm really happy with the result.
IMG_0663.JPG
All in all...i'm really pleased with the printer now...given that i'm still using the stock extruder with bowden and the stock UMO+ hotend with it's not-so-good cooling :)

Both of them will be changed soon...but first up is the UM2+ printhead...once I can get hold of the fans needed for Gudo's fan shroud. They are out of stock at Mouser, but I think Digikey have them in stock.

I finally managed to get some time to put my refurbished UM2(+) print head mounted. A simple operation thanks to Meduza's top part :)

Didn't have much time to try it yet, only a small quick testprint that looked ok.

And the postman delivered some much anticipated part also. So now I have to print some new fan shrouds :)

A slight shift in geometry when making a sudden move changing direction in my experience means that the x/y ain't perfectly square. And I mean 'perfectly' it can be a half mm or less.

I don't like lars, they depend on pressure to keep the bushings, and when they rotate the friction 'vibrations' is fully affecting the thin shafts.

IMO the best slideblocks are the gudo/neotko version. That reminds me that I should make a mxl version for someone that asked... anyhow, I want to upload also a gudo/neotko slideblock that doesn't need to use open belts (loosing the possibility of tension it). I think gt2 belts mod gives a very nice size for umo and not until a full year of use I started to notice one machine loosing a bit of tension.

Also is very easy to add/remove and you can gain a few extra mm print area because the m2.5 are so nice for this, gudo made a superb slideblocks.

Anyway I'm so freaking busy! I'll do my best to upload the models with versions for umo/mxl/closedbelt.

Lars blocks were the "best" available when I needed to print GT2 blocks. Your slide blocks looked interesting but were still a WIP ;) Once you finish them I will probably switch to them.

I also want to stabilize the bed...but not yet sure in which way. And gudo appears to have removed his mod from public view...your "adapters" for the UMO is the only trace left. But that is only the parts needed in the back.

I know :-D

And I am in no hurry to get those parts...right now I can proceed to upgrade the fans and that will keep me busy for a while
But once that is done...if your slideblocks are ready...I will switch to them :-)
(or the ZGE...which ever comes first :-D )

Well mount for your version umo/umo+ with um2 head I can tell that works and keeps working without any issue.
