Lost posts

Post by nilrog »

There seems to be some issues with posting to this forum lately. I know I have written answers to some topics that I later discover that my answers are not there.

Today I answered this topic:
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=573

But that answer is now lost in space :(

Afaik all those answers were posted from my iPhone. But that has not been an issue before.

I reviewed the system log files, no error messages at all in the past 30 days. Prior to that, a few new users failing the anti-spam question

Mind you this is on an iPhone...all those "technical" stuff is hidden from the end user ;)

It could very well be a client issue...but I have only ever experienced it here. So, forgive my bluntness, but i'm not too impressed with phpbb and their dev's after discovering their attitude towards the image rotation issue ;) :P

What I did notice when previewing/posting to that client was that someone else posted to the same thread while I was previewing/posting my response. And that response is there...mine is not. I have also noticed that at least one of my "replies" to my Polymax thread is lost-in-space :( I knew I had replied...but a few days later when I checked back it was not there.

I just wanted to post my experience for reference...this is probably just as tricky as the "logout issue" I, and in that case, others have seen. Something that still happens...but not as frequently as before.

I appreciate the feedback, even if it's negative LOL :)

Well the price is free for this software and while there are other packages out there, I think this one largely meets all of our needs.

I certainly don't want to buy vBulletin again and then spend tons of time administering that as I used to, ages ago!

You're welcome! :P

Nah, this is good enough...for its "price"...and let's keep it so...even vbulletin has its share of quirks. I will have to check that my posts appear :)

I think I know what happens...but I'm too tired to explain it now 😴

Nope...imo, it's worse than that...and I remember now that I discovered before what happens...yet I fall for the same thing again...

If you are reading a thread...and writing a reply...if, during that time, someone else posts to the same thread...the forum will not publish your post...instead it tells you that the thread has been updated while you were typing...and wants to know how you want to proceed...but, and a BIG BUT, this warning is not so obvious (at least on mobile) so you think your post was submitted and you continue browsing the forum...and here comes the next BIG BUT...when you click away for that page...there is NO warning that you are about to abandon your post...so "poof" your post silently fouls up in flames! 😡

This forum sw is the only one I have seen that behaves like this. All other forums will happily submit your post and just put it at the end of all posts.

(Sorry for the long rant...I know it's just the sw that is causing all this 🙂)

Of course it works...if you notice the problem...so you can do what the forum sw is trying to tell you...but as I wrote...it is not obvious when it happens...especially on mobile...

This is another example of bad UX-design 🙄

There's a few things phpBB does that annoys me and when I comment on their forums about it, I get flamed and attacked versus people acknowledging the issue or addressing my idea :)

Sadly that is how many "open" source projects tend to handle things...🙄

Let's forget this...until it happens again 😂😝

You can always file a bug report. Being part of the larger open source community, I can tell you that while forum trolls may not help, bug reports usually get the right attention.
