Underside overhanging area with supports

Post by GrueMaster »

This print was very tough on my CR-10S. I can't share the STL here because I don't know the origin (commissioned off of Print a Thing). Both were printed with 0.1mm layer height. First one (right) at profile speed (60mm/s) using Cura 3.0.4 and supports, which were a beast to remove. The second (left) was printed with Cura 3.2 Beta using tree supports and print speed of 30mm/s.

The bottom of the first one after breaking off the supports was so bad, I used my hot iron with a smoothing tip to clean it up (somewhat - still looks better than before).

This one is the bottom of the 2nd print after removing the tree supports and a little scraping with an xacto knife. Note all of the lines. This is what I want to smooth out.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would Print with Cura 3.1.0 or Cura 3.2 Using
Support\Touching Build Plate\Triangles\Support density 20%\ Support X/Y distance 0.15\Minimum Support X/Y Distance 0.15

What if you printed it vertically?

Looking at layer view, it looks like Cura is having issues with the underside.

I'll keep messing with it.

This is a Klingon D6 spaceship. I found a STL on thingiverse but the file is very bad according CURA 3.1 X-ray view.
If someone ask me, I do that...

Well, the customer was apparently satisfied. I received a 5 star rating, and will get $9 paid to my paypal account.

Not sure I'm ready to quit my $94k/year job, but it is a start. :-P
