New temp cartridge - won't stabilize long enough to start printing

Post by Shazam0527 »

I'm using the stock Hictop 3dp-11 firmware (located here -

I changed out the hotend for a e3d v6 - with new thermistor and sensor.

I have my hotend temp set at 210 - during startup the printer shoots up to 222, then cools down to 206, and keeps going back and forth and won't level out at 210. I've never modified my configuration.h file and I'll be honest, I don't know what I'm doing. Could anyone please help? I'm desperate here.. :(

Hello;

I started exactly where you are right now. And located Chip Lucks Post.

From there I have updated all Other version's of Marlin 1.1.x for 3DP11/3DP12

What thermister / sensor did you use to replace the original's.

If you will take some time and read all Chip's and My posts in the Hictop area you will learn more in an Hour that you will ever believe.

There are 2 two parts in the Marlin firmware that you should get familiar with. Part one is Configuration.h the Other is Configuration_adv.h.
Within these two parts of the program are most of the configuration information you will need to update.

This is all talked about In Marlin Configuration

If you read all this information then it will be easier for us to help you to reconfigure your firmware for the 3DP11.

If you still don't understand then we can find a way to do the updates for you and create a hex file that you can flash to the controller.
But you will feel a thousand percent better if you do it yourself with the forum's help.

We will be here through every step of the way if you get lost ask for help we will assist you back on the correct path.

Awesome, thank you Roberts_clif - I bought some heat cartridges on amazon, so I'm not sure what "model" they are. They fit my block just right, but heat up incredibly fast, and go over, and then under and then over and then under (waited almost an hour and never fixed) with the starting temp. I tried figuring it out, got 1.1.0-rc5 to install.

When I try to print, it connects the printer (I see the screen flash the marlin logo) and then it sits, and then says disconnected. Doesn't seem to hold connection.

Ok, I got it to connect, I realized that my baud rate was set wrong in Cura.. connected now, trying a print.

Hmm.. when I "AutoHome" on the printer, it goes to 0 and sees the zstop just fine. but when it starts to print, it's quite a bit off the heat bed...

I'm just not grasping something.. I just want the damn printer to work again, didn't realize that it was going to screw everything up by changing the heat cartridge :(

I believe the the thermister you changed is causing the hot end temperature to be erratic.

Have you read Chip Lucks posts.

I have, but I don't understand it.. I'm extremely new to 3d printing. I've read some things on PID auto tuning but when I do what it says on some pages, I get "Auto tune failed, temp too high" and it's below where I set the temp to be by a lot.

It's a brand new heat cartridge and it heats up quick..

I have the temp in Cura set to 210 for printing.. the heater heats up very quickly, shoots up to 250, then cools down to 206, then heats up again up to 215, then back to 206, then back to 215 - over and over.. I can't get it to stop, i've tried 3 new heat cartridges from 3 different sources.

I let it set for nearly 45 minutes and it started printing, but the head temp is all over the place, from 206 to 220

Put the original thermister into the e3d v6 this should keep the temperature stable.

In the Firmware there is a data file that was setup for the Original thermister.
Unless you change the data file for the thermister you are installing the temperatures will be all over the place.

I had to replace the old one as it died. How do I find/figure out what thermister I need? I've got the Hictop 3dp-11 printer.

What kind of thermister did you buy to replace the original.

I buy my thermisters from Hictop as it is a Hictop 3DP11/3DP12 ungraded to a 3DP17 almost
HICTOP 5 Pcs 100K ohm NTC Thermistors/Temp Sensor for Reprap 3D printer.

https://www.hic3dprinter.com/collections/all

And in configuration.h file I select thermister 1

Sample configuration.h settings
* --NORMAL IS 4.7kohm PULLUP!-- 1kohm pullup can be used on hotend sensor, using correct resistor and table
*
* Temperature sensors available:
*
* -3 : thermocouple with MAX31855 (only for sensor 0)
* -2 : thermocouple with MAX6675 (only for sensor 0)
* -1 : thermocouple with AD595
* 0 : not used
* 1 : 100k thermistor - best choice for EPCOS 100k (4.7k pullup)
* 2 : 200k thermistor - ATC Semitec 204GT-2 (4.7k pullup)
* 3 : Mendel-parts thermistor (4.7k pullup)
* 4 : 10k thermistor !! do not use it for a hotend. It gives bad resolution at high temp. !!
* 5 : 100K thermistor - ATC Semitec 104GT-2 (Used in ParCan & J-Head) (4.7k pullup)
* 6 : 100k EPCOS - Not as accurate as table 1 (created using a fluke thermocouple) (4.7k pullup)
* 7 : 100k Honeywell thermistor 135-104LAG-J01 (4.7k pullup)
* 71 : 100k Honeywell thermistor 135-104LAF-J01 (4.7k pullup)
* 8 : 100k 0603 SMD Vishay NTCS0603E3104FXT (4.7k pullup)
* 9 : 100k GE Sensing AL03006-58.2K-97-G1 (4.7k pullup)
* 10 : 100k RS thermistor 198-961 (4.7k pullup)
* 11 : 100k beta 3950 1% thermistor (4.7k pullup)
* 12 : 100k 0603 SMD Vishay NTCS0603E3104FXT (4.7k pullup) (calibrated for Makibox hot bed)
* 13 : 100k Hisens 3950 1% up to 300°C for hotend "Simple ONE " & "Hotend "All In ONE"
* 20 : the PT100 circuit found in the Ultimainboard V2.x
* 60 : 100k Maker's Tool Works Kapton Bed Thermistor beta=3950
* 66 : 4.7M High Temperature thermistor from Dyze Design
* 70 : the 100K thermistor found in the bq Hephestos 2
* 75 : 100k Generic Silicon Heat Pad with NTC 100K MGB18-104F39050L32 thermistor
*
* 1k ohm pullup tables - This is atypical, and requires changing out the 4.7k pullup for 1k.
* (but gives greater accuracy and more stable PID)
* 51 : 100k thermistor - EPCOS (1k pullup)
* 52 : 200k thermistor - ATC Semitec 204GT-2 (1k pullup)
* 55 : 100k thermistor - ATC Semitec 104GT-2 (Used in ParCan & J-Head) (1k pullup)
*
* 1047 : Pt1000 with 4k7 pullup
* 1010 : Pt1000 with 1k pullup (non standard)
* 147 : Pt100 with 4k7 pullup
* 110 : Pt100 with 1k pullup (non standard)
*
* Use these for Testing or Development purposes. NEVER for production machine.
* 998 : Dummy Table that ALWAYS reads 25°C or the temperature defined below.
* 999 : Dummy Table that ALWAYS reads 100°C or the temperature defined below.

I bought these

Seems to fit the specs of the hictop one.

I tried your suggestions with 1.1.0-RC5 and got it to start printing, but it was way too high off the build plate. I'm not figuring out how to bring that starting level back down. I put the factory firmware back in, and the temps are still fluctuating wildly but it's printing. I'd prefer to figure out the height issue on 1.1 rc5 if you can assist. I greatly appreciate your time and effort. I wish I could grasp these concepts like you have.
