Not Witertight and shows holes

Post by Balxur »

Just started running in to this issue. I printed similar files to this last year (different names and numbers)
I open this file in other tools (like 3dviewer dot net) and the mesh looks fine.

Cura (4.13.1) seems to not render this properly or slice right.

File was built in FreeCad (0.20.1). I created meshes and then exported the mesh

I'm a bit at a loss here as to what is going on
I have been googling and reading for quite a while here, but I may just print this to see how it ends up.

Pretty confident the STL is being exported fine and there are no gaps. Kinda feel this is a Cura issue
I'm leagues away from having any expertise here.
My cad skills are more like a 'fake it till you make it'

Here, there are 7 gaps I circled

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Or tips on what I can do better is always a bonus

Thanks in advance!

Could you post the FreeCad file for me to look at.

Absolutely!
Note: I have modified this a bit now and I don't get the 'watertight' warning from Cura, but these holes are still there
I'm going to print this to see what it ends up looking like. Only 30g of filament, so not a big deal

Interesting. I changed the name and number (next player) and things get a bit weird
Process:
Open pre-existing file that looks normal in the Mesh output.
Modify 2 x test values
Reposition to center in the model
Select all to export as mesh

Looks fine in FreeCAD (don't see the extra layer of the test at all)
Exported mesh has a double layer of the text parts (in Cura and other viewers as well)

Must have something messed up in FreeCAD and this is getting the slicer buggered up
Perhaps this is unrelated, but I thought Id share in care this makes the issue more obvious

Much appreciated!

For the second one. I think I figured out what I was doing wrong
If I ctrl-click select the 'Part002' and the other 2, there is no issues
If the 'Part002' is expanded and I shift-select everything, I get the floating words

I'm sure my modeling is sub par and cringe worthy, so it's likely something odd I have going on

Mesh does not warn about watertight, but the rendered gcode in Cura looks like it does have holes
I printed the Edwards one to see what the print actually looks like. There is definitely some holes. The larger ones are noticeable and the smaller ones bled enough that I can't see them.

So, I definitely messed up somewhere

I exported the file as a step and imported it into Solidworks and it showed the text about the rest, with multiple parts. You have 3 parts in FreeCad, you need to combine them to make 1 part then export it, that should work.

I think I know what you mean.
I've been looking at reading on combining parts. Seems to be a tough thing for me to nail down though.
Can you point me to what tool in which workbench?

I only use FreeCad a little so I hope I've explained it OK.
Select Part from Top middle menu that drops down. Then in select Part from the Top menu, then Boolean and Union. This will combine the parts. I did this with the "b" and the disc below and they move up.
Try that and see.
