I recently saw a thread on Twitter between Dzingof and RichRap3D about this decision for multiextrusion. It was about the fact that Autodesk has a patent on the almost identical solution with a single nozzle and 8 feeders. It is possible that in the end it will not move beyond experimental solutions.

Has the patent expired?

It appears that the Autodesk patent is describing something quite different than the Multiextrusion for Prusa.
One is about mixing colors in the hotend and the other one about changing filament to get either one color or another.

I would be slightly worried if I was the selling the Diamond Hotend though:

I hope this does not get into the same "patent troll" situation as the Stratasys patent on separating the motors from a temperature controlled build chamber. As I understood that situation, Stratasys does not really have a patent on the heated chamber itself, but all the other consumer 3D-printer manufacturers are much smaller than Stratasys and are so scared of upsetting Stratasys that they don't dare to build anything with a heated print chamber.
And Stratasys are just sitting there, not providing anything reasonably priced with a heated chamber, effectively holding back the whole 3D printing industry until the patent finally expires.. :(

Exactly. And if we remember financial performance of Stratasys (and they are far from the word "good"), then the probability of a lawsuit approaches 100%.

And it's the expired patents that launched the 3D printing revolution. This technology has been out there for a long time (80s!) but these guys patented it and sat on it for only their high end machines.

But...then again the FormLabs printers exist despite their troubles with patents.

Looks like they've hit some road bumps with the multimaterial upgrade...

I saw a YouTube video where he spoke about using the Bondtech extruder gears, so that should be a nice addition

At least he is offering a lot of honest information about what the problem is and how they are seeking to resolve it.

Yes, I like their openness...hats off for that :) But I think he has been too optimistic about what he can deliver :P

I guess I like his open-ness about what he is working on.

Versus selling a printer, when you know you are releasing a new one the next day (i.e. Ultimaker) :)

I think when you help your customers understand what you are working on, that helps build excitement.

Sigh, if I had known it would still take that long I would've kept my money longer. But I'm happy that they refuse to start shipping until everything is solved.

Well think of it this way....you are in line. Had you waited with your money, you would be at the very end of that line!
