Thanks!
Yes, the project is the most cost effective I have seen so far. All the components are easy to source (even in Switzerland). The only thing I would do differently would be not to take aluminium (coated) for the axes as the bearings actually wear them wayyy faster than I thought... will need to switch to steel conduit. But hey, it's a great learning experiance anyway. Basically building your own 3d - printer / cnc from scratch using your 3D - Printer.
It is actually really sturdy and the guys are milling aluminium with it (but slow of course). In only plan to use it as a laser / pen plotter and some wood milling.

For aluminum, it will be more grinding than milling ;)
But i do agree, you can do a lot of things with that -- Cutting vinyl is also a great application.

Who doesn't like a nice rack ;)

I need a new piece of furniture for my UMO. Was tempted to get an IKEA Skogsta first, but then I thought that for this money I can get me some premium Misumi parts and make an alu extrusion rack. What's it with the racks today? :P

My day....first day back to work after being out Friday, Monday and Tuesday Co-workers have been coughing all month and despite my increased intake of Vitamin C...caught the Bronchitis/Flu/some sort of plague bug. Finally starting to feel better, I haven't touched my printer in a week, I just had no patience to deal with anything. (Well asides my air combat flight sim , where i logged a few hours in the P-38L and Ar-234 jet bomber)

martin-bienz wrote:Form 2, very interesting device, I follow them since the beginning. Also their role in the 3D Printing movie / documentary (can't remember the name) was rather interesting.
Can you, are you allowed, to explain "far outside the specs" ? :)
Can not tell you right now since it is a scientific project and not all journals like things published on Internet in advance (in case the project succeeds).
Meduza was there by the way, I hope he keeps his fingers away from the keyboard :-)
Considering what I did previously, you can probably guess roughly what we were trying to do, but don't write it here then :-)

Yes, i was there... Anders and his colleague was abusing the hell out of our demo machine at 3DVerkstan, the statement of "far outside the specs" are almost not enough to describe it :-) (but don't worry Anders, i will not tell them what you did to that poor printer) ;)

I bet he was using laser to activate some weird goo and print ummm adamantium! You guys with all that machines remind me when I was young and saw the movie Real Genius on the screen. Ofc now I know it was just a silly movie but anyway...

Haha, that is not that far from what is going on in our labs actually :-)
I it is all there, optical tables, lasers, liquid nitrogen, 19" racks full of fancy power supplies and so on :-)

Reality has a bit less of the sudden insights and the drama though and you normally celebrate once your article is accepted.
Can't seem to find any good photos of our labs. I will try to take one tomorrow so you can see how it looks in reality for yourself.

I heard similar story as in the movie once by the way.
It is supposed to have happened when SKB tested a method of welding thick copper cylinders for the project of storing spent nuclear fuel here in Sweden.
As the story goes, they used a huge electron gun to weld the several centimeter thick copper lid onto the copper cylinder.
At some point, the electron gun was accidentally left on, and it then quickly ate trough the beamstop and the wall
Not sure if the story is fully true, but I would consider the source as fairly reliable :-)

Let's be cautious since I want the forum to stay suitable for the youths wanting to learn 3D printing, please :)
