19v on a 12v fan. Too much love can kill XD

Btw you guys know I have zero electrical knowledge but I saw a post somewhere that you could make something to down the v from 19 to 12 (and add a dioder) so you can safely use a 12v fan on the umo.

I guess it was with a Zener Diode.

Short answer: don't do that, they are not made for that.If you want to do that, use a proper 'step down' voltage regulator.

Yes but on my Ultimaker Original...again, not a plus, I shouldn't have to adjust anything.

Just need help picking the right 50x50x15 12v fan :)

Kill instantly? How so?
Not every fan is fine with a 11kHz(?) PWM Signal. Imagine someone shaking you 11'000 times per second... :-o

No Lepaul, ultimaker original not plus uses 19V for the fans, but ultimaker uses 12v fans that 'work'. So unless you get a second exact fan, you will need to do stuff (I think).

I just checked the number on the original UM2 fans. It says DF0301012BM-501. Apart from the small probability the last three digits are a tribute to Darth Vader's 501st legion (sorry, I couldn't resist after knowing that LePaul has friends who are working on STAR WARS :geek: ) the first two letters are interesting. DF = Delta Fan? :-?
If that would be true, then Delta Fans should be our New Hope!

Here's the search I did...perhaps it will be helpful? http://www.mouser.com/Thermal-Managemen ... x2Z1yww2yq

(Just uncheck the 50mm box in the top left)

Re. the PWM vs Voltage thing, I made a quick (and boring) video to illustrate my point...

Amedee still hoping you suggest a fan for me to order! :)

Yes, I understand, but I am struggling with that.

The UMO case is challenging, because you need a 12V fan that won't fry at 19V and does PWM. You won't find that in the specs, no manufacturer will guarantee that their 12V fan will happily take 19V. I guess we need a fan with no advanced electronics, so over-voltage won't be an issue and PWM typically works with 'simple motors'.

Best bet is to find somebody who as one and take the specs -- I spent quite some time yesterday to find back an old forum post about that, with no success.
If you want something that works, order an Ulimaker fan (e.g. from fbrc8) -- More expensive, but guaranteed to work; if my UMO fan would die that's what I would do.

Now for a dual fan project I would rather look at 24V fans to be 'in spec' re. voltage... But that would be trial and error, so I don't want to recommend something I have not tried myself.

And what about a stepup from 19v to 24v? This way you could use the easy-to-find sunon 50x50x10 umo+ fan on your umo. It's easy to do a stepup?

None of the support places I've seen stock UMO fans. Just UMO+ on up

With the partnumber from github you can order a part, but since they ask to ultimaker and go back it might take a good couple of months, unless you pay more and get a full 'fan pack' for umo
