Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
Yesterday for the first time ever since doing 3D printing I suffered a failed print due to filament entanglement I started with a new spool and somehow managed to route the filament so bad on my UM2 that a number of rounds managed to jump over the rim of the spool and that got then pulled together to a point where the feeder could not pull anything anymore - mid way into a 3.5h print.

That's no fun...I had that happen on a brand new spool of Ultimaker Silver-Grey once...it was tangled within the spool itself and just ground the filament down in the feeder until jamming that up. Not fun to dismantle and clean up (that spring likes to shoot!)

Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
The only filament problem I currently have is that my spool is almost used up and due to the small radius, the filament will break into pieces when left in the bowden tube for some time...

Heh, awesome! Lifting the spirits of the children and their families goes a long way in the healing process. It's great that you are involved.

Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
My previous university Lab got an UM3, nice stuff to play around with tbh, but starting a print doesnt really work, the printer shutsdown and reboots when preheating. I am assuming faulty PSU, checking with UM/reseller, but have you seen anything like this before?

Check reboot_overzicht for behavior and reboot_closeup for the PSU light dying out too. When manually preheating(see video) there is no problem at all, even though an additional core is being heated up(all 2 vs only 1 in the print videos)

Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
I spent quite some time 3d printing this weekend. My Prusa MK3 arrived on Friday.
Initially I was really happy with it, it seems like top improvements all the way (filament detection, the detachable heatbed-cover, collision detection on the steppers, extremely silent).
Noticed fairly quickly the carriage belt wasn't running really smooth, it tilted back and forth (
Managed to fix that somewhat by moving the pulley on the stepper, but it's not perfect (this is something that should've been picked up during assembly, it was literally scraping particles of the belt).
Since then a component in the PSU started vibrating. 15 minutes after that stopped it was replaced by a pretty loud hum.
Never experienced anything like that on my MK2.
Mailed Prusa again to ask for more clarification but I'm not a happy camper at this point.

You do have quite a "wiggle" there, don't you?
I had to re-check...thought you might have said you have a Mk3 but those are still in pre-order, I believe.

But they aren't
Meet the #prusa family:
MK2S-MultiMaterial: MK3: MK2S will normally be getting the heated bed and filament sensors upgrade as well shortly, as soon as they start sending those out.
(Ow, and between the 2, you can see the sides, is my trusty old UM2 that became a UM2+ a while ago)

Nice print....how do you like the Prusa? Or PrusaS (plural)

Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
I dunno... I mean, they require a lot more "hands on" and maintenance than my UM. I move my printers around quite a lot to give demos. The prusa's tend to have problems a lot more than the UM2. Mostly because everything "just hangs out there", instead of being tucked away nicely.
And the entire auto-calibration / P.I.N.D.A probe thing (+ the fact that it renders them unable to use glass) is not worth the hassle to me. I still have nightmares about replacing that PEI sheet, let alone any drive to use a different sized nozzle.
They did find nice middle ground with the magnetic heatbed top. (Still would prefer plain old glass though... The UM2 has had perfect first layers for 4 years, something I definitely can't say about the prusa's).
But I like where they are going overal, the filament sensors on the 3 work very nicely, which is why I'm upgrading the 2 as well.
So overall: Definitely more work to keep them running, but if they run I'm really happy with them.

My UM2+ is my tank...just works so well. The PEI sheet has been a really good addition. It's doing great with PLA and PC

Re: A Tea between friends :-) How was Your Day
Same here, bought the UM2 4 years ago and it's still plowing through everything I feed it.
I assume you stuck that PEI sheet over the glass?
So you would take out the glass if it was worn down, fairly straightforward replacement I presume.
I like the PEI sheet itself and the quality it gives, but on the MK2 you actually need to disassemble the complete heated bed assembly, put the thing in the freezer for an hour, break off the PEI sheet and then use limonene to peel the glue. All without breaking the heated bed. (like I said: nightmares)
The new magnetic attachment means you just take of the entire plate, exposing the actual heated bed. So they made the PEI a consumable.
There are different ones: You have regular sheet metal with a PEI sheet on both ends, or PEI treated metal in 2 finishes. One is really polished but not very scratch resistant, the other is sturdier. Depends on what you want. Think they even have "regular metal on which you stick whatever you want".
It's pretty cool... If you want to continue printing without cleaning, turn it around.
If you don't want to wait until everything cools down until the print comes lose: buy a second sheet, replace it when the print is done and continue printing. That is something I really like... Waiting for that bed to cool down between prints is a b*ch
If the print doesn't come loose, bend the sheet a bit.
You do have to watch your fingers though, those are some really strong magnets and it pinched my thumb pretty bad the first time because I didn't expect it

Yes, I just put the PEI on top of my Ultimaker glass, which hasn't ever given me much trouble.
That magnetic PEI plate looks great!

You guys are so quiet lately..............what's going on?
Just received a CR-10S from PrintedSolid, they have a good sale going on and they thoroughly test out each one....they even replaced the faulty capacitor which is a recent discovery that's plagued many.
And according to Banggood my Tevo Tornado may ship in mid March
